Match report
Potters Bar 1st XI v Radlett
23.7.05
Radlett             264-3 dec. 50 overs
Potters Bar      268-6 from 58.4 overs

Potters Bar’s improving performance in the second half of the season continued with a 4 wicket win over Radlett following Radlett’s sporting declaration.

With both teams needing a victory, albeit for slightly different reasons, Potters Bar won the toss and asked the home side to bat on a very green wicket.  The wicket did a little early on but thereafter flattened out into a very decent batting strip that both sides made full use of.  Radlett lost two wickets reasonably early as Leonard Cooper bowled impressively to pick up both openers thanks to sharp catches at slip and gully by Adam Norman and Tom Coughlan respectively.  Despite these early breakthroughs Radlett’s run rate was always good and when Shane Burger joined Dan Chippeck they were well placed for a large total.

Despite the good batting strip the bar’s bowlers didn’t ever really show enough control in line or length as Burger cruised to 82* and Chippeck, who scored a well made century but fell to Tom Coughlan’s off spin late in the innings, took Radlett to 264 off just 50 overs.  With 60 overs left in the game this was certainly a generous declaration and one that was questioned by some of the observers at the interval.

Radlett were obviously looking to move closer to the top of the table with a win but after Bar’s opening partnership this never really looked on.  Bar’s pair of Mike Palmer (68) and David Breeze (61) gave the away team a solid platform in good time with shots coming all round the ground.  None of Radlett’s bowlers seemed able to contain Breeze until shortly before tea when he was caught a deep mid on trying to clear the field.  His knock really set up the victory and repaid the faith of his captain in pushing him up the order after some very promising innings earlier in the season.

Breeze’s demise brought Olly Coughlan to the wicket and as usual he took time to get established.  The pair remained unbeaten at tea but there was still a long way to go with the away team needing around 7 runs an over with more than 150 needed.  Palmer’s dismissal, as he was caught on the boundary, brought skipper Jared Norman to the crease to join Olly Coughlan.  The pair added around 80 runs in quick time with the usually consistent Browne being particularly hit through and over the leg side boundary (sometimes with more power than style it has to be said).

The rate was reduced to around 6 an over when Coughlan tried to sweep the Radlett seamers once too often and was rightly adjudged LBW for 39 off 68 balls.  At this point the game was slightly in the balance as Leonard Cooper joined Norman.  However, some further lusty blows had reduced the rate to about 5 an over when Norman was very well caught on the boundary edge attempting to dispatch Browne once to often for 41 from 27 balls.  Even Cooper’s dismissal (21 off 13 balls) could not prevent Adam Norman (16*) and Nesan Jayaratnam (15*) coolly reaching the target with 8 balls to spare.  The Bar celebrated a well earned victory in a good game of cricket made possible by Radlett’s positive declaration.  The Bar entertain Sawbridgeworth this weekend and will be looking to keep the excellent recent form going with another victory.
