I am extremely proud to be captaining the 3rd XI this season in what is my 10th season playing senior cricket at Potters Bar. When I started, Potters Bar were a lower/mid table side in Division 9 and often had to call upon “ringers” and last minute phone calls to friends and family. The fact that 10 years later we have 2 sides below us shows how far the club has progressed. I believe that it is a great achievement for the boys to still be playing their cricket in Division 6, only a league below what the 2’s were playing in when I joined, and I strongly believe we have the potential to be one of the strongest sides in the league.

The previous two years campaigns have been marred somewhat by poor availability both in the 3’s and in teams higher up, making my predecessor Neil Raisborough’s task very difficult with a victorious team one week often being barely recognisable come the next. However with the influx of quality cricketers at the top end of the club, I am hopeful we shall see better availability through the club and are able to select strong sides week in week out. When availability is good, results have shown that this team can compete with the best sides in the league. In 2007 we beat both the top two sides in the division and last year only two of the eventually promoted sides beat us (one on a diabolical wicket in pouring rain) proving that on our day we are more than a match for anyone.

I fully expect Dan Brown to have a good season with bat and ball on top of his excellent contribution in the field. Promising youngsters Tom Rowlands and Alex Whitehouse will continue to cause problems for all batsmen at this level and I expect both to progress this year and start pushing for selection for the 2’s. Add to that the experience of evergreen Michael John and Rupert Pyrah, both of whom Tom and Alex can learn a lot from, and I honestly believe that you are looking at one of, if not the best, seam attacks in the league.

On the batting side, an opening pairing of young and “experienced”: Adam Titmuss and Rob Daley will be complemented by John Lewis – never knowingly short on runs – with stroke makers such as Hayden Rogers and Steve Moore to follow in the middle order. In addition to that: Dan Brown, Tom Rowlands, myself and the explosive hitting of Michael John make up a strong batting line up that should post good scores, particularly on the fine wickets prepared up at the school.

I feel far more optimistic at the start of this season then I have done at the starting point of any other season in recent memory and I hope that the boys can play to the full potential and for us to be in and around the promotion mix at the end of the season. A goal which I truly believe to be achieveable.
