Potters Bar 4ths: Away to Chorleywood

Herts Saracens Lge: Division 11   Toss Won by: PBCC

Side batting First:  Chorleywood 176- 6

Side batting second:  PBCC 113-10

Poor availability affected Potters Bar 4ths late push for a division 11 promotion spot in their game against table topping Chorleywood 3rds.

After winning the toss, Ian Breeze elected to field in an attempt to control the game, which was clearly going to be rain affected. Timi Fadipe bowled his best spell of the season so far and he took 4 wickets for 43 off his 11 overs. Chorleywood were in trouble at 74 – 5 but a middle order partnership between Rose and Dare took the game away from Potters Bar. After the 37th over , Chorleywood made a generous declaration at 176-6.

This total gave Bar the incentive of chasing 30 points and they did so with enthusiasm as John Lewis (37), Luke Owers (23) and skipper, Ian Breeze (40) applied the pressure. However wickets fell at regular intervals and none of Potters Bars eight other batsmen achieved double figures. This was the difference between the two sides as Bar eventually finished on 113 all out with Rupert Seaman the not out batsman.

Potters Bar 4ths: Away to Frogmore

Herts Saracens Lge: Division 11   Toss Won by: PBCC

Side batting First:  Frogmore 162-10

Side batting second:  PBCC 163-3

Potters Bar 4ths put in another good performance against Frogmore in last Saturdays Div 11  game. After winning the toss, Ian Breeze elected to field on a pitch that looked green and wet. This decision was soon paying dividends as Hayden Rogers and Freddie Panthaky demonstrated accurate seam bowling from both ends. Frogmore’s opening bat, Harrison was clean bowled by Panthaky and Rogers ended on figures of 4 for 46 off his 18 overs. Spencer Randon (2 for 56) and Luke Owers (3 for 23) also bowled excellent spells in order to dismiss Frogmore for 162.

Potters Bar were initially timid in commencing their run chase. Paul Wiffen  was bowled for 0 and this brought John Lewis to the crease. Lewis cracked an entertaining and unbeaten 86. He was supported by the ever reliable Roy Metselaar (52 runs.) Luke Owers and Freddie Panthaky also contributed to the chase with some fine stroke play. Potters Bar reached their target with 7 wickets and 14 overs in hand. This win, against a side two places higher, puts Bar in with a chance of promotion so long as they can win 2 or 3 of their final 4 games.

Potters Bar 4ths: Away to Abbots Langley 3rds

Herts Saracens Lge: Division 11   Toss Won by: PBCC

Side batting First: PBCC 262-5

Side batting second:  Abbots Langley  132-all out

Potters Bar 4ths put in another good performance against Abbots Langley in last Saturdays Div 11  game played at Parmiter’s School, Watford.

Electing to bat first on an excellent wicket the Potters Bar batsmen, Samitha Jayakody and Paul Wiffen, soon began to play their shots. When Wiffen was out, caught behind, Jayakody took control of the game with a knock of 134 runs. He was ably assisted by Luke Owers(33) and Ben Scarisbrick(29.) Ian Breeze was able to declare in the 48th over on 262 – 5.

Daniel Brown’s opening spell removed any hopes that Abbots Langley had of reaching this daunting total, and Brown finished on figures of 3 for 31 off his 13 overs. Two wickets each for Spencer Randon and Hayden Rogers assisted in Abbots being bowled out for 132. This was an efficient display from Potters Bar as several key players were missing. Furthermore, the improved availability of Sri Lankan Samitha Jayakody may yet give Bar hopes of a top four finish.

Potters Bar 4ths: Home to Rickmansworth 3rds

Herts Saracens Lge: Division 11   Toss Won by: Rickmansworth

Side batting First: PBCC 220-8

Side batting second:  Rickmansworth 203-7

Potters Bar 4ths put in an improved performance against Rickmansworth in last Saturdays Div 11  game played at Dame Alice Owen’s School.

Asked to bat first on a green wicket, Potters Bar scored 220-8 with Roy Metselaar returning to form with a gritty 56. He was aided significantly by John Lewis (37) and Luke Owers, unfortunately out on 49!  Ben Scarisbrick scored a quick 23 and Steven Brown and Spencer Randon kept the tail wagging with some sensible running and well hit boundaries.

220 was always just out of Rickmansworth’s reach, but Bar’s lack of a real strike bowler was evident as they failed to bag a deserved 30 points from this game. David Brown bowled accurately for his figures of  3 for 64 off 14 overs, and Luke Owers demonstrated his all round ability with a tight bowling spell of 1 for 31 off 10 overs. Bar gained 17 points from this match, in comparison to Rickmansworth’s 9, but this game will go down as a missed opportunity.

Potters Bar 4ths: Away to Northwood 3rds
Herts Saracens Lge: Division 11   Toss Won by: Potters Bar
Side batting First: PBCC 67-10
Side batting second:  Northwood 68-5

Potters Bar 4ths suffered the embarrassment of recording their lowest ever score at Amersham on Saturday. Ian Breeze elected to bat first and it proved a costly decision as the ‘rain affected’ wicket made batting difficult. Roy Meselaar and Paul Wiffen scored 23 off the first 5 overs as the ball kept its’ shine and came onto the bat. However as the game wore on the bounce became unpredictable and only Metselaar achieved double figures (26.) Bar were dismissed in only the 18th over for the poor score of 67.

Northwood found it equally difficult to score runs as they lost 5 batsmen and used 27 overs in accumulating the 68 runs needed for victory. Luke Owers (3 wickets for 7 runs) and Spencer Randon (2 wickets for 25 runs) were the pick of the Potters Bar bowlers. However this was a poor performance from the fourth team players who failed to show the required batting technique and commitment on an admittedly difficult pitch.

Potters Bar 4ths: Home to
Shenley Village 3rds
Herts Saracens Lge: Division 11   Toss Won by: Shenley Village
Side batting First: Shenley Village, 159-9
Side batting second:  Potters bar, 160 - 5

Potters Bar 4ths returned to winning ways with this comprehensive victory over near neighbours Shenley Village. Heavy overnight rain had affected the wicket in some areas.  Shenley won the toss and bravely elected to bat. This proved to be a costly decision as Bar bowlers Timi Fadipe and Daniel Brown tore into the opening batsmen with some accurate seam bowling.

Brown returned figures of 2 for 27 off his 14 overs and he was ably assisted by 2 wickets apiece for Paul Wiffen, Luke Owers and Tom Pett. 159 never looked to be a sufficient total for Shenley , and so it eventually proved.

It was not easy for Potters Bar’s early batsmen as Shenley’s accurate bowling attack initially restricted Bar to a mere 46 runs for 3 after the first 20 overs.

However, excellent knocks from wicket keeper John Lewis (65) and Dame Alice Owen’s pupil, Matt Hart (43*) added much needed impetus to Bar’s innings and the total was eventually surpassed for the loss of only 5 wickets.

Potters Bar 4ths: away to Southgate Adelaide 3rds
Herts Saracens Lge: Division 11   Toss Won by: PBCC
Side batting First: Potters Bar, 241-8
Side batting second:  Southgate Adelaide 245-5

Potters Bar 4ths continued their losing streak, although they managed to pick up 15 valuable league points from this entertaining game against fellow promoted side, Southgate Adelaide. After winning the toss, Ian Breeze elected to bat on a true wicket and an extremely hot afternoon. After Paul Wiffen’s early dismissal, Roy Metselaar (73) and John Lewis (77) put on a 150 run partnership. Andrew Hughes came to the crease after Lewis was bowled and he put on a quick fire 35 off 14 balls including 3 sixes.

However the quality of bar’s bowling failed to match their batting. A selection of wides and long hops allowed  Adelaide  to cruise home with six overs to spare with only five wickets down. Tom Flint and Sawan Shah, both pupils of Dame Alice Owen’s School, batted sensibly for Adelaide and they brought the game to an efficient early close.

Next week PBCC 4ths travel to Shenley Village 3rds.

Potters Bar 4ths: home to Broxbourne 3rds

Herts Saracens Lge: Division 11   Toss Won by: PBCC

Side batting First: Broxbourne 232 - 9

Side batting second:  Potters Bar 115-10

Potters Bar 4ths missed out on the chance to go into a top 3 spot by capitulating all too easily to a well organised Broxbourne side. The situation after 26 overs looked bright for Potters Bar as Broxbourne were in trouble at 109 for 6.  Spencer Randon had justified the captain’s decision to field first by taking 4-32 off his 7 over opening spell. However a fine 96 run partnership between Broxbourne youngsters Fryer and Thompson  turned the game on its’ head. Broxbourne batted all their overs and set 232 for Bar to chase.

This total always looked out of reach. Some of the more established Bar batsmen have not yet  re-discovered last season’s form. Club availability  also dictated that Bar fielded a team lacking  several recognised batsmen. However Bar should offer no excuses as 115 all out represented a weak response. Potters Bar only gained 4 points from this poor performance.

Next week PBCC 4ths travel to Southgate Adelaide.

Potters Bar 4ths: Away to Ware CC 2nds

Herts Saracens Lge: Division 11   Toss Won by: Ware

Side batting First: Ware, 60 -10 (Paul Wiffen 5 for 12 off 5 overs.)

Side batting second:  Potters Bar 61-1 (Roy Metselaar 25 not out.)

Potters Bar 4ths registered their second victory of the season at Ware, and climbed into a top five spot in division 11.

Ware’s delightful ground had been adversely affected by the previous day’s rain and consequently the wicket was inconsistent. After having elected to bat Ware were soon in trouble with Timi Fadipe bowling a controlled spell which left him with figures of 2 wickets for 18 runs off 9 overs. However it was the late arriving Paul Wiffen who stole the show with 5 wickets for 12 runs off 5 overs. This aggressive spell dismissed any Ware resistance and they were all out for 60.

A brief rain delay and the threat of a curtailed game incited Bar openers John Lewis and Roy Metselaar(25*) to go for a quick finish. Lewis was caught after a dashing 16 and it was left to Mount Grace School pupil, Neil Oak, to finish off the game with a timely 14 not out.

Potters Bar 4ths: Away to Leverstock Green 3rds

Herts Saracens Lge: Division 11   Toss Won by: Potters Bar

Side batting First: Potters Bar, 191 – 9 Andrew Hughes, 71. Matthew Hart , 62

Side batting second:  Leverstock Green 171 – 4.

Potters Bar 4ths were justifiably disappointed to only manage a draw out of this div 11 encounter at Parmiter’s School , Garston. Having won the toss Potters Bar elected to bat and were soon in trouble as father and son opening pair, Peter and Paul Wiffen fell in consecutive overs. John Lewis looked confident until he ran himself out going for a risky second run. After 11 overs P.Bar were 18 for 3  and looking vulnerable.  Matthew Hart(62 runs)  and Luke Owers(25 runs) “steadied the ship” with a valuable stand of 80 runs. Owers was run out attempting to increase the scoring rate and this brought Andrew Hughes to the crease for his first innings in 4 years, as he has had a complete break from the game. Hughes took a while to regain his timing and confidence and then opened up with a blazing innings of 71. This allowed Potters Bar to put on the impressive total of 190 from an unlikely start.

Leverstock Green initially approached their task positively, and at one point were 158 – 4 with 6 overs remaining.

33 runs from 6 overs with 6 wickets in hand should have led to an exciting finish, but inexplicably Leverstock elected to go for the draw rather than the win and finished on 176 – 4.

This was a disappointing finish to a game that had been competitive throughout. Next week, PBCC 4ths are at Ware .
