> Club to raise funds
As the Club's first major fundraising venture for the new Clubhouse, Sarah Withers of the Ladies Hockey Club is setting up a 24hrs Cyclethon (24hrs on exercise bikes) in the Clubhouse from 9.30pm on Saturday 9th May to 9.30pm on Sunday 10th May.

The target for this fundraising event is set at £10,000 so it's no easy task. Dig deep and donate generously! Please tell all your friends and family about what we're doing and ask them if they can spare some cash too. If you're already down to ride the bike tell everyone what you're doing and what it's for, give them the link and ask them for a few pounds - every little counts towards this total and there's only a month or so to raise it.

Now, if you pay tax the club can actually get more money through Gift Aid and reclaiming the tax. So if you donate £100 the club will actually get £128.20 without costing you anything extra. To do this you just need to tick the Gift Aid box.

So, if you haven't already volunteered to ride please do, then start spreading the word about what you're doing and get donations!

Any questions just get in touch.

Thanks,

Sarah

> COUNTY CUP / NATIONAL DRAWS

Potters Bar have been given tricky draws in the 2 cup competitions this season.  In the National Cup we have been drawn away to Middx Premier League side Hampstead (Sunday May 3), who contain  ex-Middx spinner Paul Weekes and Middx 2s starlet Shaun Levy.  The winners of that will entertain the winners of the Wanstead /  Harrow game.

In the County Cup Bar face an awkward trip to Division One side Hitchin (Sunday June 7)who finished a few points shy of promotion last season.  The winners of that tie will entertain either Hertford or Kings Langley on Sunday July 5th.

The club are not entering the newly formed CCC Cup (which was the Evening Standard Cricket Trophy).  This is due to the club entering the Cockspur 20/20 cup, where will be grouped with 7 localish sides with the winners of each of the 4 groups playing in a Finals Day in August.  The winners of that competition will go through to the next finals day, culminating with the Finals live on Sky in early September.

> POTTERS BAR PRO PASSES 10,000 FIRST CLASS RUNS

2008 professional Lanka de Silva passed an amazing achievement in the opening game of the Sri Lankan season against Kash Weeraratne's Ragama.  With a trademark square cut, he brought up 10,000 First Class runs, an achievement only reached by 9 other Sri Lankan cricketers.

Lanka joins such characters as Aravinder de Silva, Kumar Sangakkara, Sanath Jayasuriya, Mahela Jayawardene, Arjuna Runatunga, Marvin Atapattu and Tillekeratne Dilshan.

Lanka last year scored 609 league runs at an average of 55.36 with a top score of 154 against Harpenden at The Walk in July.

> 1ST XI LEAGUE FIXTURES RELEASED

Potters Bar 1st XI's fixtures have finally been released as they return to the Home Counties Premier League.

The games start on Saturday May 9 and they start with an away game at fellow newly promoted side Farnham Royal who fight out of the Slough area of Buckinghamshire.  They then entertain big spending Henley before a trip (and in the words of S'Express and it is a trip) to Banbury.

The Chess Valley League fixtures have been released and all appear on http://www.pottersbarcc.co.uk/1stfix2009.aspx

The fixtures for the 2s, 3s, 4s and 5s have yet to be released but as soon as they are they will appear here.

> Potters Bar pro from 2005 plays for Mumbai, against England

Ex-Potters Bar player Vinet Sinha played for Mumbai against England in their first one-day warm-up game and soon demolished Matt Prior's middle peg for just 7.

Vinet, who played during the 2005 league season took 21 league wickets ended the Mumbai v England game taking 1 for 32 from 6.5 overs despite the Mumbai youngsters slipping to a heavy defeat

> Kash v Lanka ends in a draw

The first 3-day game of the much troubled Sri Lankan season ended in an exciting draw.  Returning from his Hong Kong Sixes exploits 2006 & 7 ex-Bar pro Kash Weeraratne captained Ragama against Bar 's 2008 pro Lanka de Silva who represents the Tamil Union.

The Tamils made 207 thanks in the main to Lanka who made 58.  Ragama replied with 355 thus having a lead of 148.  The Tamils went in again and again thanks in the main to Lanka striking 63, they set Kash's Ragama 211 to win from 36 overs.  Kashie took 4-104 in the Tamil's second dig.

Alas after a good start, wickets tumbled on a regular basis and the stars from Ragama finished 191 for 8 but won the game on first innings.  They now move onto a one-day game on Wednesday, again against the Tamils, this time at home.

> DEVELOPMENT GAMES OFF

Unfortunately the games between Abbots Langley which were supposed to be played on Sunday 20th & 27th of July have both sadly had to be cancelled.

The visitors could nto raise a side for this weeks game and due to the 1st XI's continued involvement in the Evening Standard the 27th July game has also been cancelled.

EVENING STANDARD DATE

Due to our opponents in the Standard, High Wycombe having a postponed National Final game, the last 16 round game will now be played at The Walk on Sunday 27th July 2008 with a 1pm start.

The winners of that tie, will then travel to Sunbury in the quarter finals and play on the following Sunday, 3rd August 2008.

COUNTY CUP DATE

This game was supposed to be played on Sunday 27th July where we travel to Welwyn Garden City.  Due to our involved run in the Evening Standard and that Herts have matches where both clubs provide players, the game will now take place on Sunday 10th August 2008 with a 1pm start.  All support would be greatly appreciated

ESSEX PREMIER LEAGUE STARS BEATEN

Potters Bar have stormed into the last 16 of the Evening Standard cricket trophy with a 6 wicket win over Essex Premier League side Saffon Walden.  Chasing 220 to win in 50 overs, Nesan Jeyaratnam playted a majectic innings of 106* from 150 balls to see the boys home after Greg Hodge's 3 for 29 took the stuffing out of the visitiors top order.

This means Bar now entertain HCPL side High Wycombe at home on Sunday 13th July with a 1pm start.  Remarkably we are now just 3 wins away from an appaearance at The Oval on September 7!!

EVENING STANDARD PROGRESSION
With far from a full strength side to pick from, Potters Bar turned the form book on its head with a 13 run win over Kent Premier League side Blackheath to enter into the 3rd Round of the Evening Standard Cricket Trophy.

Thanks to 50* from Sir Charles Hodge and 49* from Northants Academy player Will van der Maat, Bar posted 184 for 7 from their 50 overs.  After a rip roaring start the hosts were 40 for 0 off of 4 overs but a 3 wicket spell from Sir Charles pegged them back.

With some supportive bowling and fielding saw the Bar home by bowling the Kent Pemier League side out 12 runs shy.

Bar now entertain Essex Premier League superstars Saffron Walden on Sunday June 29

> IPL DEAL FOR KASHIE + ASIA CUP CALL-UP

Ex-Bar professional Kash Weeraratne has managed to secure an IPL deal for next season! He will be representing the Kolkata Knight Riders which currently has the likes of Chris Gayle, Brad Hodge, Ricky Ponting, Shoaib Akhtar and skippered by "The Prince of Kolkata," Sourav Ganguly.

Kash has also kept his place in the 15-man Sri Lankan One Day squad which is competing in the Asia Cup in Pakistan from June 25 through to the July 5.  They start off with a game against Bangladesh then follow it up with a game against the UAE.  You can watch the games, all live on Steanta.

> EVENING STANDARD ROUND 2

Through the non-appearance of Old Actonians on Sunday at The Walk, Bar have gone through to Round 2 of the Evening Standard where we will be playing last years runners-up Blackheath on Sunday June 15 at 1pm.

Unfortunately the game is away from home so an early start will no doubt be the order of the day!!

> NEW SIGNINGS CONFIRMED

Potters Bar have managed to capture several players for the forthcoming season.

After the loss of Gavin Baker to WGC and Paul Barker to Radlett as well as the national call-up of Kash Weeraratne to Sri Lanka for the 1-Dayers, the club can confirm the following cricketers have signed and joined the club

Nick Walker - ex-Derbyshire & Leicestershire >Go

Steve Gale - ex-captain of Hatfield >Go

This is already on top of both Adam Norman, who has returned from Australia and Tommy Coughlan who has returned back to the club from nearby Enfield.

See below for Tommy in his pomp.

We anticipate confirming a 'replacement' for Kash within the next week or so, subject work permits etc as well as one other 'major signing' within the next few days.  We have one more 'iron' in the so-called fire and hope to know one way or another next month of his decision.

Once all of the signings are confirmed we will be in a position to do a more detailed peice on the 5 players concerned.

> PATRICK BROWNE IN FULL WEST INDIES DEBUT

Patrick Browne

(Patrick receives hs cap from Clive Lloyd)
It was with great pride to see that Patrick Browne finally received his West Indies debut in the 3rd One Day International against South Africa at Port Elizabeth on Sunday (27th Jan 2008.)

Pat, in for the injured Shivnarine Chanderpaul batted beautifully and showed his class as he made 35 from 54 balls in a West Indies total of 252 for 7 from 50 overs.

The stylish right hander shared a 75-run stand with Sewnarine Chattergoon as the Windies slowly started to build a total.  During his stay, Patrick struck Shaun Pollock for 6 over extra cover and Charl Langerveldt played go fetch as Pat dispatched him with a trademark pick up shot over square leg.

All at Potters Bar send their congratulations and hope this is the first of many more caps for the Barbados star who was our pro back in 2004. More>

 COUNTY CUP DRAW RELEASED

As losing Semi Finalists last year, Potters Bar will start their 2008 County Cup campaign with an away tie against Division 2 league side Leverstock Green on Sunday June 8th.

Should we progress we will face the winners of the Watford Town v Totteridge Millhillians on Sunday July 6th at home.  A win in that game will probably see us travel to local rivals Welwyn Garden City on Sunday 27th July 2008.

>'LARGEY' TO OFFICIATE IN EVENING STANDARD TROPHY FINAL

Club stalwart Brian Shepherd has been given the honour of umpiring in the Evening Standard Final due to be played on Sunday 7th September 2008.  The game should be held at the Brit Oval where the cream of the Home Counties cricket will do battle.

This is arguably the biggest game in club cricket, certainly the biggest prize fund anyway and for one of our own to get a game of this stature is a great boost not just to the club but the County as well.

> NATIONAL FIXTURES RELEASED

Potters Bar have received their first and possible second and third round draws in the 2008 National 'Cockspur Cup.'

Bar have been given a home tie against Enfield on May 4 and should we be good enough to progress we have another home tie against either Southgate or Hitchin on May 18.

If the games go our way we are then faced with a possible trip in Round 3 against either Harlow, Colchester or Essex Premier League side Hainault & Clayhill on June 1.

> Buy at Xmas and help the club >GO

> EVENING STANDARD FIXTURES RELEASED

Potters Bar have received their first and possible second round draw in the 2008 Evening Standard Competition.

Bar have been given a 'winable' home tie against Old Actonians (who play in the Fullers Brewery Middlesex Division 1) on Sunday May 11 at 1pm.  Should we be fortunate to get through that tie, we will travel on Sunday 15th June to Blackheath who play in the Kent Premier League, who just so happened to lose in last years final.

> 1st XI LEAGUE FIXTURES RELEASED

The 2008 League Fixtures have been released and again the start of the season has not been overly kind on Potters Bar.

The league season starts on Saturday May 10 where Lenny Cooper's men travel to Sawbridgeworth.  The first home game of the season takes place the following week (May 14) where we entertain Stevenage and on Saturday May 21 sees us take on West Herts away from home.

A full breakdown of the fixtures can be seen at http://www.pottersbarcc.co.uk/1stfix2008.aspx

The 2s, 3s, 4s and 5s league fixtures should be released by Christmas and the draws for both the Evening Standard and the National should be available by the second week of December.  We are also still awaiting news on the release of fixtures for both the Ches Valley and Herts Development Leagues.
